Common Causes of Local Flooding in Denver
The City of Denver, Flood Protection Handbook cites many reasons for local flooding. SERVPRO® of Denver West responds to flood and storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Cherry Creek, and we know that our fast response time is key to minimizing further damage. Here are some common local causes of flooding from the City of Denver handbook:
- Heavy rains
- Summer storms
- Winter snowmelt
- Overflowing river channels, creeks, and gulches
- Storm sewers
According to the handbook, flooding can be aggravated by debris blocking the waterway. Hail has also been known to clog storm drains and sewer inlets. Urban developments cause less water to soak into the ground and interrupt the natural flow of water to waterways, causing the draining systems to be overloaded.
Here are some safety tips from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), on things you can do to prepare for a flood:
Know Your Risk for Floods
Visit FEMA's Flood Map Service Center to know the types of flood risk in your area. Sign up for your community’s warning system. The Emergency Alert System (EAS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio also provide emergency alerts.
